Description:  This class is a hands-on approach to learning basic grammar. Please see this page on the website for a full explanation of the methodology. I use a Socratic discussion method in this class where I will ask the students questions to help them justify why each word is what it is based on the rules and tests we have learned for each part of speech. Parents, if grammar is not your strong suit, please consider sitting in on the class with your student and see the purchasing note below. Students will use the Basic Level student package as well as the Supplemental Workbook. Tutor: Mrs. Jolene Ceravalo

Description: Does your student have a story to tell? Have they been jotting down stories ever since they were little? Do they want to learn more about the elements of a good story? Then this is the class for them. We will be using Creating an Eternal Story written by Pat Roy (Creator of the Original Jonathan Park Adventures) for this class and may dabble in other things if time allows. It is a step-by-step workbook that will guide us through the entire storytelling process. Here is a little nugget from the forward written by Ian Bultman (Creator of the Brinkman Adventures):

"You are allowing an expert storyteller to become your mentor. Pat Roy’s methods are proven. He has written or co-written over 130 stories that have gone on to touch millions of people. You are about to meet an amazing and encouraging teacher who will carefully guide you in the craft of storytelling.

Throughout this workbook, Pat generously shares tricks of the trade that have helped make the Jonathan Park series such a massive success. He includes easy-to-follow steps while helping you navigate the trickier points of advanced storytelling. While there are many writing how-to books out there, this one is unique. It presents complex techniques in an understandable manner. More importantly, it includes God and faith in the creative process, bringing incredible clarity and purpose to your writing with the potential to change lives for eternity!"

Homework: There will be regular writing assignments of various sorts that tie into our workbook.

Required Supplies:

  • Creating an Eternal Story written by Pat Roy
  • Pencil
  • A 3-ring binder and looseleaf paper or a notebook may be needed for the writing assignments or something to hold printed pages for any writing done on a computer.

Supply Fee: Coming soon...

TUITION: $40/student per month  (This class has a 3 student minimum AND a 6 student maximum.) *This class will NOT meet on March 18th. Tuition for March, 2026, will be $30.00.

Note: Parents may pay monthly or by the semester via Check or Cash.

Tutor: Mrs. Jolene Ceravalo

Description: I love reading books, and I also enjoy watching movies. Movies are stories we watch, often based on a book or story written for readers and later turned into a movie. I hope to enjoy lively discussions and insights as we watch approximately 15 movies and examine them for their literary qualities. We will likely also take time to discuss our views of each film from a Christian perspective. I am excited to dive into this new class with all of you.

From Movies As Literature: "Every story has a purpose. It uses techniques meant to impact its audience. Film is a medium with its own techniques. Since a movie is generally no more than 2 hours

in length, it follows the structure of a short story even when based on a novel. That is, the story is usually told from one point of view, follows a single major plotline, and has only a few well-defined central characters. This simplified structure should make it easier for students to dig deeper into the story elements.

Literature teaches. A well-written story appeals to our emotions. We find ourselves absorbing what it tells us is important in life and what behaviors are acceptable. This course is intended to help students understand the elements of good story-telling, identify and respond to messages even if they are not obvious at first, and to understand the techniques used by filmmakers or authors to involve us emotionally as we watch or read. In this way, students will develop the ability to critique stories, whether on film or in print."

From Cinema Studies for Literature Learning: "This curriculum is geared to the visual learner, to those who are reluctant readers or for whom reading is very time-consuming, and to those who love movies! Good movies tell good stories, and good storytelling requires the use of traditionally respected literary devices and techniques. With a little help from a study guide, many movies introduce the viewer to excellent literature that is being presented in a visual medium. This format for literature study is a great option for high school students who become overwhelmed with a demanding reading list."

Homework: Each movie will be studied in a two-week segment and will need to be watched once during the first week and a second time during the second week. There will be assigned questions to answer. Each movie will also require one or more big assignments...reading a related story or book, writing a paper, etc.

Movie List: Plan to watch the movies through a streaming service or on DVD or Blu-ray. Hopefully, most movies will be easily and inexpensively available. Rental fees, if needed, are the responsibility of the student's family.

Tentatively, movies will include the following and more:

  • The Music Man (1962)
  • A Christmas Carol (1984)
  • What's Up Doc? (1972)
  • Emma (1996)
  • The Wizard of Oz (1939)
  • The Philadelphia Story (1940)
  • The  Importance of Being Earnest (2002)
  • Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)

Required Supplies:

  • Movies As Literature Student Workbook  -  Available at Rainbow Resource or at Design-A-Study
  • Cinema Studies for Literature Learning Curriculum  -  Available at 7sisters
  • A way for students to view each movie.

Supply Fee: $12

TUITION: $40/student per month  (This class has a 3 student minimum AND a 7 student maximum.)

Note: Parents may pay monthly or by the semester via Check or Cash.
