Description: I love to read! Books often bring me joy. This class is a bit different than previous Middle School Literature classes, but I think it will be enjoyable. Here is a bit of an overview from the text we will be using: "This is a middle school English course. ...Children will learn all about newspapers and how to write all kinds of articles. They will also read two works...each month, working through history... The literature is excellent and will be enjoyed by most students. The writing assignments will develop writing skills, especially the ability to be clear, concise, and focused. ...Students can also...create their own newspaper. This should be fun and not stressful."
Homework: There will be a variety of book-related or newspaper-related projects.
Book List: Plan to acquire a paper/print copy of each title. It is important for students to read the book. If it would help your student, they may listen to the books, but only if they are reading along in the print copy.

Description: I am really excited about looking more closely at Children’s Literature with your student this year. Over two decades ago, I took a Children’s Literature class in college and absolutely loved it. There is something delightful about children’s books that, to me, is timeless and enjoyable...no matter your age. I know the idea of studying children’s stories as a high school student may seem a little unusual, but I feel as a homeschool parent and tutor that we are able to study just about anything at any level. That is one of the joys of homeschooling. To be able to share with all of you my love of books and reading together brings me great joy. We will be doing a lot of reading, a lot of discussing, a lot of thinking, and, hopefully, some fun projects during this class.
I am hoping, to some degree, to examine the books we read through the lens of God’s Word, particularly Philippians 4:6-9. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.” These descriptive words will, at times, be our guide as we discuss the books we are reading...true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy...
I am looking forward to an amazing year of reading and discussing a variety of children’s books from the last 150 years. I pray that this class is a blessing and a joy to all who participate in it.
